Food for Spain
Spanish Civil War Solidarity Banners
Food for Spain, paint and graphite on cotton canvas with cotton twill guide tapes and pole loops, 118 cm x 116 cm. Artist unknown.
These banners were produced by the ‘Hammersmith Aid Spain’ movement in support of the elected Spanish Republican government during the civil war 1936-39. They aimed to raise funds and to show solidarity with the International Brigades – volunteers from around the world who went to fight fascism in Spain.
This banner is part of the Marx Memorial Library's collection and was shown with others at ‘Banners for Spain! Fighting the Spanish Civil War in London’ at Islington Museum, May to July 2017. Their conservation was sponsored by the Textile Society and the General Federation of Trade Unions.
