The Lockout
Derby Peoples History – Innovation and Disruption 1700–2020 The Lockout. Red Saunders – artist
Red’s images offer an alternative visual history of working peoples’ ongoing struggle for democracy in Britain. Local people are at the heart of Hidden, enacting and recreating on camera stories of innovation and disruption from Derbyshire’s past.
Three historic and globally significant moments for the city have been recreated by Red in three photographic tableaux for the new Museum of Making, this being one. The Derby Lockout was a key moment in the development of working class identity. In 1833-1834 there were disputes at Derby’s silk mills after a worker was dismissed. Members of trade unions were locked out of mills including The Silk Mill. After months of bitter conflict the locked out workers and their families faced poverty. This was Britain’s first major industrial dispute and captured the attention of the nation. Though unsuccessful, the workers actions helped create the foundations for the labour movement.
Bill Whitehead “I am proud to be part of this project. I’ve been a trade union activist all my working life and researched and wrote about the Lockout. This was an important event in the international origins of the labour movement and is something for Derby to be proud of.”
