Red Saunders combines his photographic practice with political activism to re-imagine important historic scenes featuring the revolutionaries and radicals so often hidden from history. Local people are at the heart of Hidden, enacting and recreating on camera stories of innovation and disruption from Derbyshire’s past.
Three historic and globally significant moments for the city have been recreated by Red in three photographic tableaux for the new Museum of Making, this being one. This photograph takes as its starting point the ground-breaking painting, known as The Orrery, created by Joseph Wright of Derby in 1766. Wright is known for his works depicting marvels of scientific discovery at a time often called the Enlightenment.
