Josie Smith

Josie Smith, a retired, disabled miner arrested outside his back gate.

Miners who returned to work were escorted by the police on foot through the streets, rather than discreetly transported in a van. This public display was designed to provoke and divide communities. In the confusion of police and pickets, Josie was arrested, but was later released following petitions from his wife and union leaders.
